What about remote sampling? One simply ties a rope to the loop hasp and lowers it slowly down into the space. The audible/visual alarms will alert you to any hazards. You can then scroll through the peaks to see the readings. And once personnel enter the space, personal monitoring is a simple as attaching the monitor via its alligator belt clip.
